TIRZEPATIDE – INJECTION (tir-ZEP-uh-tide)

*Note: Your medication is a compounded version. Tirzepatide is the active ingredient in the brand-name drug Zepbound.
This medication is a dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. It is used, along with diet and exercise, to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. Certain products are also approved for chronic weight management in adults who are obese or overweight with weight-related conditions. It works by increasing insulin release, reducing appetite, slowing digestion, and improving overall metabolic regulation.
Use this medication exactly as directed by your healthcare provider. Tirzepatide is typically given once weekly on the same day each week. Inject under the skin of the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Read the “Instructions for Use” before your first injection. Inspect solution before use; do not use if discolored or cloudy. Rotate injection sites with each dose. Do not share your injection pen with anyone, even if the needle is changed. Your dose may be increased gradually to help reduce stomach-related side effects. Do not use more than prescribed. Do not stop using the medication without your doctor’s approval
Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, stomach pain, decreased appetite, fatigue, burping, or indigestion. These effects are generally mild and improve over time. Tell your doctor right away if you experience: Symptoms of pancreatitis (severe abdominal pain that may radiate to the back) Signs of gallbladder problems (severe stomach pain, fever, jaundice) Signs of kidney problems (changes in urination, swelling in legs/feet) Severe vomiting or inability to keep fluids down Worsening diabetic eye disease Symptoms of allergic reaction: rash, swelling, severe dizziness, breathing difficulty Seek care if you notice a neck lump, hoarseness, or trouble swallowing. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medications and supplements you use. Tirzepatide may increase the risk of low blood sugar when taken with other diabetes medications such as insulin or sulfonylureas. Dose adjustments may be required. Because it slows stomach emptying, it may affect absorption of certain oral medications, including: thyroid replacement birth control pills antibiotics medications that require precise timing Do not start, stop, or change dosing of any medication without your doctor’s approval. Limit alcohol, which may increase the risk of low blood sugar.
Symptoms may include severe nausea, vomiting, or significant low blood sugar. Seek emergency medical help if severe symptoms occur. You may also contact your local poison control center for guidance.
This medication is part of a complete treatment plan that may include diet changes, increased physical activity, and regular blood sugar monitoring. Do not share this medication with others. Keep all medical and lab appointments while on this therapy.
If you miss a weekly dose, take it as soon as you remember as long as your next dose is at least 4 days away. If it is too close to your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take two doses within the same week. Resume your normal schedule the following week.
Storage instructions depend on the form you receive. Injection pens (general guidance): Store unused pens in the refrigerator. Do not freeze. Once in use, pens may be kept at room temperature or refrigerated according to the instructions for your specific product. Protect from direct heat and light. Keep all medications out of reach of children and pets. Do not store in the bathroom.
Before using tirzepatide, tell your doctor if you have: personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) MEN 2 (multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2) pancreatitis gallbladder disease kidney problems stomach/intestinal disorders such as gastroparesis diabetic eye disease history of suicidal thoughts if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding Avoid excess alcohol. Use caution when driving or operating machinery until you know how the medication affects you.
