This medication is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. It is used, along with diet and exercise, to help improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. Certain forms of semaglutide are also used for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or in overweight adults who have weight-related medical problems. It works by helping your body release insulin, lowering appetite, slowing digestion, and improving how your body regulates blood sugar.
Use this medication exactly as directed by your healthcare provider. Semaglutide is usually given once weekly on the same day each week. It may be injected under the skin of the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm, or taken by mouth depending on the prescribed form. Do not use more than your prescribed dose. Do not change the dose or stop taking this medication without your doctor’s approval. If using an injection: Read the “Instructions for Use” before your first injection. Inspect the medication; do not use if cloudy, discolored, or containing particles. Rotate injection sites with each dose. Do not share your injection pen with anyone, even if the needle is changed. If using oral tablets: Take first thing in the morning on an empty stomach with a small amount of water. Swallow tablet whole—do not split, chew, or crush. Your doctor may gradually increase your dose to reduce stomach-related side effects.
Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, stomach pain, decreased appetite, fatigue, dizziness, and indigestion. These usually lessen as your body adjusts. Tell your doctor right away if you experience: Signs of pancreatitis (severe, persistent abdominal pain with or without vomiting) Signs of gallbladder problems (fever, severe stomach pain, yellowing of skin/eyes) Signs of kidney problems (changes in urination, swelling in feet/ankles) Severe or ongoing vomiting or dehydration Worsening vision in people with diabetic eye disease Symptoms of allergic reaction: rash, itching/swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing Tell your provider if you develop a lump or swelling in the neck, hoarseness, or trouble swallowing. This is not a complete list of possible side effects. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all prescription, nonprescription, vitamin, and herbal products you use. Semaglutide can increase the risk of low blood sugar if used with other diabetes medications such as insulin or sulfonylureas. Your doctor may adjust the doses of these medications. Because semaglutide slows digestion, it may affect how quickly other oral medications are absorbed. This is especially important for: thyroid medication certain antibiotics birth control pills medications that must be taken on a strict schedule Tell your provider if you drink alcohol, as it can increase the risk of low blood sugar. Do not start or stop any medicine without a doctor or pharmacist approval.
Symptoms of overdose may include severe nausea, vomiting, or low blood sugar. If someone collapses, has trouble breathing, or is unresponsive, call emergency services immediately.
This medication is only one part of a complete treatment program that includes diet, exercise, and regular monitoring of blood sugar and other labs. Do not share this medication with others. Keep all medical and lab appointments. Do not share this product with others.
If you miss a weekly dose, take it as soon as you remember as long as your next dose is at least 2 days away. If it is too close to the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your normal schedule. Do not take two doses within the same week.
Storage instructions depend on the form you receive. Injection pens (general guidance): Store unused pens in the refrigerator. Do not freeze. Once in use, pens may be kept at room temperature or refrigerated according to the instructions for your specific product. Protect from direct heat and light. Tablets: Keep all medications out of reach of children and pets. Store at room temperature away from moisture and sunlight. Do not store in the bathroom.
Before using semaglutide, tell your doctor if you have: personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) MEN 2 (multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2) pancreatitis gallbladder disease kidney disease stomach/intestinal disorders (such as gastroparesis) diabetic eye disease history of suicidal thoughts if pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding Limit alcohol use while taking this medication. Use caution when driving or operating machinery until you know how the medication affects you.
